Speed is everything with stains. The sooner you treat them, the better your chances of full removal. Here's a stain-by-stain guide to what actually works.
Blot (never rub) immediately. Cold water first, then a solution of washing-up liquid and white vinegar. On carpet, avoid hot water — it sets the stain. Vanish Oxi Action is effective for residual marks on fabric.
Act immediately. Blot up as much as possible. Salt can draw moisture out while still wet. Cold sparkling water helps lift the stain. Avoid rubbing. For set stains on carpet, White Wine Remover or Bissell Stain Remover are both reliable.
Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda or cornflour to absorb the grease before attempting to clean. Once absorbed, brush away and treat with a small amount of neat washing-up liquid. Rinse with warm water.
Let it dry completely before attempting to remove it. Brushing wet mud simply spreads it. Once dry, vacuum or brush off the dried mud, then treat any remaining mark with a damp cloth and mild detergent.
Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) is the most effective solvent for ink stains on most surfaces. Apply to a cloth and blot — don't rub. Test on a hidden area first for coloured fabrics.
Always cold water — hot water sets blood stains permanently. Rinse with cold water immediately, then treat with salt and cold water paste. Hydrogen peroxide (3%) works well on white fabrics but can bleach colour.
