How to Clean Your Oven Properly (Without Harsh Chemicals)

The oven is one of those cleaning jobs most people put off — and then dread when they eventually face it. The good news: it doesn't have to be as grim as you'd expect, and you don't need to reach for toxic caustic sprays to get a great result.

How to clean your oven properly

What You'll Need

  • Bicarbonate of soda
  • White vinegar
  • Washing up liquid
  • Rubber gloves
  • Scrubbing sponge or stiff brush
  • Old cloths or paper towels

Step-by-Step: The Natural Method

Step 1: Remove the oven racks and soak them in hot soapy water. Leave for at least 30 minutes —overnight if they're particularly greasy.

Step 2: Make a paste from bicarbonate of soda and a small amount of water. Coat the interior of the oven, avoiding the heating elements. Leave for a minimum of 2 hours, ideally overnight.

Step 3: Wipe away the paste with a damp cloth. Spray white vinegar onto any remaining residue — it will fizz and lift the last of the grease.

Step 4: Scrub racks clean, rinse, and replace. Wipe the oven door with a glass cleaner for a streak-free finish.

If You Prefer a Commercial Product

Mr Muscle Oven Cleaner and Astonish Oven & Cookware Cleaner are both well-regarded. Apply according to instructions and ensure good ventilation — they're effective but strong.

How Often Should You Clean Your Oven?

Ideally every 3 months for regular home cooks. A quick wipe-down after every heavy use prevents grease from carbonising and becoming a much bigger job.
